Ghana Takes A Big Step To Safeguard Kente’s Legacy At A National Forum

Lucy Anko Awenlie, Michelle Kunadu from the International Affairs Secretariat, and Mr. Hans Galloway from the CEO’s office represented the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in the National Workshop on the Protection of Ghana Kente as a Geographical Indication.

Intellectual property specialists, traditional leaders, Kente weavers, and officials from private, governmental, and international organizations were all present at the workshop, which was coordinated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Registrar General’s Department.

Discussing the legal, cultural, and economic importance of preserving Ghana Kente as a Geographical Indication (GI) is the primary goal of this session. This would protect its originality, publicly acknowledge its place of origin, and stop it from being abused or copied on domestic and foreign markets.
