The first deputy speaker of Ghana’s parliament and member of parliament for Akatsi South, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, has been nominated to lead the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) African Geopolitical Group’s Democracy and Human Rights Committee.
He accomplished this during the 150th IPU Assembly, which is currently being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from April 5–9, 2025.
As part of its role, this Committee looks at emerging and existing threats to human rights and democracy. Through its annual political resolutions, which are ratified by the full IPU membership, it also suggests parliamentary action on these issues at the national and international levels.
