Ghana’s Next Attorney General: A Look At The Potential Candidates

As John Mahama returns to power with a new team of people, a number of government positions have been discussed since he was elected president of Ghana. Almost every role in the previous administration will be replaced, but one of the most discussed topics is: Who will be the Attorney General and Minister of Justice?.

According to reports, there are a lot of people “fighting” for Godfred Dame’s role as the Attorney General, and based on their qualifications, they are all highly qualified.

The possible candidates listed below are:

• Former Ghanaian Attorney General and Justice Minister Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong. In 2013, President Mahama officially appointed this lawyer as the AG. In Ghana, she is the second woman to occupy this position; Betty Mould-Iddrisu was the first.

On January 6, 2017, her term as attorney general came to an end. On July 1, 2018, she was appointed to the International Chamber of Commerce’s Court of Arbitration for a three-year term. She is a Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors (GARIA) Honorary Council Member.

The 23rd Attorney General and Minister of Justice of Ghana is Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong. She served under President John Dramani Mahama from February 2013 to January 2017. Benjamin Kunbuor came before her and was also preceded by Gloria Akuffo.

Marietta Brew graduated from the University of Ghana in Legon with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and the Ghana School of Law in Makola with a Professional Certificate to Practice Law in 1994. Later, she pursued a graduate degree in Law and Development at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, Netherlands.

She began her career at the Fugar and Co. law firm and has been a practicing attorney for more than 20 years. Then, in 2000, she relocated to become a director and shareholder of Lithur Brew & Company.

Her areas of expertise as a seasoned litigator include general corporate advice, transactions, and commercial law, among others.

She was appointed to the International Chamber of Commerce’s Court of Arbitration in June 2018 for a three-year term that would run from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2021. At the ICC World Council Meeting in Paris on June 21, 2018, the decision was made to appoint her.

Mahama Ayariga:

Mr. Ayariga is a lawyer. He began his career at the University of Ghana’s Faculty of Law as a teaching assistant in international law and natural resources law. In addition, he co-founded and served as executive director of the Legal Resources Center, a group dedicated to advancing social justice, community development, and human rights.

The 50-year-old is a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which was just elected. He served as the Information Minister and and Media Relations and the Minister of Youth and Sports under the John Dramani Mahama administration. He is currently the Member of Parliament representing Bawku Central constituency of the Upper East Region of Ghana in the 4th, 6th and 7th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana.

Since taking office in January 2013, Mahama Ayariga has served under President John Dramani Mahama.
Since entering politics and the legal profession, he has held a number of government posts, including those under the late John Evans Atta-Mills as the Minister for Youth and Sports.

Dominic Akuritinga Ayine:

He has a strong chance of becoming the next Attorney General. On the ticket of the National Democratic Congress, the 58-year-old silent politician represents the Bolgatanga East Constituency in the Upper East Region in the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.

He holds degrees from Stanford University and the University of Michigan. He graduated from the University of Ghana in Legon, Greater Accra, with a Bachelor of Arts in law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in law from University Of Ghana, Legon in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana and GSL in 1995. He also earned his LLM in (International Economic Law) at University of Michigan Law School in 1998. He then went to Stanford University Law School, in California, USA for an LLM in (International Trade Law) in 2003 and subsequently a JSD (Trade and Democracy) in 2006.

Thaddeus Sory:

In addition to being a Notary Public and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), Thaddeus Sory is the Managing Partner at Sory @ Law.

Thaddeus spent roughly ten years as the managing partner of Dery & Co. prior to joining Sory @ Law. He was crucial in making Dery & Co. one of the most respected legal practices in the Republic of Ghana during this time.

As Managing Partner, Thaddeus Sory Esq.FCIArb is now in charge of overseeing Accra and Wa in the Republic of Ghana’s Upper West Region.

Additionally, Mr. Sory teaches advocacy and legal ethics as a lecturer at the Ghana School of Law. He is a well-respected litigation attorney in the Republic of Ghana who is adaptable. He has successfully handled a number of cases in various legal fields. According to different accounts, he is “a battle horse” who “knows all his procedures” and “a fantastic litigation lawyer” with extensive knowledge of alternative dispute resolution, particularly arbitration.

In addition to the aforementioned, he has taught arbitration to lawyers and other professionals and is a member of the Ghana Arbitration Center’s education committee. For several cases referred to the Center, he has been designated as the exclusive arbitrator. Sory has previously handled a number of cases before the Court of Arbitration for Sports and at the moment the vice chairman of the Appeals Board of the Confederation of African Football.

Haruna Iddrisu:

54 years old Karela United and Steadfast Football clubs are owned by Haruna Iddrisu, a lawyer, politician, and football fan. He represents Tamale South in the Fourth Republic of Ghana’s eighth Parliament. Ato Forson took over as the NDC’s Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament after he left in January 2017.

Payments Of Ministries, Departments And Some Big Agencies Blocked

In January 2005, the Tamale South member of the Ghanaian parliament took office.
In Parliament, he served as the Minority Leader from July 2017 to January 2023.

Iddrisu entered mainstream national politics after years of serving as a student leader during his tertiary education, and in 2002 he was promoted to the position of National Youth Organizer for the National Democratic Congress. Even while serving, he maintained that role for eight years even whilst serving as Minister of Communications in the Atta Mills Government. Iddrisu stepped down from the position in 2010.
