Government To Unveil An Innovative Digital Solution For Taxi Drivers. This Is How To Join

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is set to unveil a novel digital solution that aims to significantly improve the livelihoods of local taxi drivers, particularly members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and revolutionize Ghana’s transportation industry.

The GoRide App, a local platform for ride-hailing, will soon go live.

The government’s bold plan to use digitalization to address Ghana’s transportation sector’s economic difficulties includes this platform. GoRide introduces a driver-friendly 10% commission, in contrast to existing ride-hailing services’ higher commission rates.

This significantly lower rate is intended to boost local drivers’ earnings, improve their financial security, and guarantee the operation’s long-term viability. Additionally, 1% of drivers’ earnings will be contributed to pensions, guaranteeing drivers’ futures and long-term financial security.

The GPRTU first approached the government with a pressing concern, pointing out that existing apps were taking all the business and market share from local taxi drivers, an essential component of Ghana’s transportation system.

These platforms imposed exorbitant commissions on drivers, significantly reducing their earnings and making it more difficult for them to maintain their standard of living.

Local drivers who use these presently available platforms also expressed concerns that, despite working long hours, high commissions were reducing their income.

Dr. Bawumia intervened in response, utilizing the private sector to develop GORide. The app was made with the passengers and drivers in the sector in mind.

Not only does it make it easier for local taxi drivers to compete, but it also lowers the commission fee to just 10%, which is much lower than the rates offered by existing apps.

Additionally, the 1% pension contribution will guarantee that drivers will not only plan for their financial future but will also earn more.

This platform is a system that not only improves their earnings but also contributes to the growth of Ghana’s digital economy by working closely with GPRTU drivers and other stakeholders.

The GoRide app provides broader socioeconomic benefits in addition to increasing driver income. The platform has been approved by the Ministry of Transport and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) for its potential to improve road safety by allowing real-time monitoring of driver behavior and vehicle performance.

In addition, it is anticipated that the app will modernize the transportation industry, preserving profits within the nation, and contribute to Ghana’s overall economic development by generating long-term employment opportunities for local drivers.

The 10% commission structure was agreed upon after extensive discussions with drivers and unions like the GPRTU to improve drivers’ financial well-being.

GoRide is not just an app for hailing rides; but a tool for economic empowerment because it ensures that local drivers earn more and contribute to their pension plans, providing financial security over the long term.

GoRide’s launch is a significant milestone because it demonstrates the government’s commitment to digitalization as an economic transformation engine.
