Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Dr. Prince Hamid Armah (MP), has launched Ghana’s Roadmap, which outlines how the country intends to significantly minimize emissions from the built and construction sectors of the economy through the adoption and utilization of low carbon building or construction materials by 2050.
The roadmap aims to address the environmental impacts of the built environment.
The Ministry launched the “Transforming the Built Environment through Sustainable Materials” program in November 2023 with assistance from UN-Habitat, UNEP, and UNOPS to address the environmental effects of Ghana’s built environment.
The production and use of building materials like cement, steel, and aluminum have significant carbon footprints, and the building and construction sector is by far the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for 37% of global emissions, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (2022).
Ghana’s Affordable Housing Making Impressive Progress
These figures emphasize Ghana’s urgent need to reduce the construction industry’s impact on the environment.
The Ministry’s commitment to creating communities that are long-lasting, resilient, and healthy is reaffirmed by the Roadmap’s launch.
