How Asantehene’s Wife Was Sacrificed In Exchange For The Survival Of Asanteman

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II narrating the tale

History tells us that the Asantehene Osei Tutu I had his cherished wife sacrificed as a penance in return for a definitive survival and triumph of Asanteman.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II retold this pulsating tale while he was destooling Nana Adutwiwaa Bonin III, Queen of Denyase Traditional Area, for breaking the Great Oath of Asante.

Asantehene did this to demonstrate that Asanteman stands fundamental in every way.

Otumfuo ordered the ancient gun known as ‘Agyaponmaa’ to be brought into the state before the destooling process could begin.

He then, remembered the instance in history where the Asantehene was charged to forfeit Agyaponmaa, his darling and dear wife, to emerge victorious in a great war that confronted them.

“He was about to go to war and he was directed to sacrifice his wife for victory and hang her bead around a gun. She was his beloved wife. He loved her dearly above all but then he sacrificed her.”

He noted that Denyasehemaa had broken the rules of the Great Oath, and despite the favor he had bestowed upon her, he could not bear to allow her to continue ruling.

His Highness Otumfuo Osei Tutu II showed that preceding her conjuring of the pledge, he had allowed her various opportunities to hold back, but without much of any result, thus necessitating her to face the consequences.

“If we decide to let her go scot-free, who else will we apply this to? You seated me here and before that, you charged me with the responsibility of supervising the affairs of Asanteman with truth and honesty. You told me the Golden Stool and the Great Oath are my properties which must be safeguarded. You told me I have no mother, sibling or friend but the Great Oath and the Golden Stool. If our feet are not firmly positioned, the essence of our tradition and culture will be lost.”

When Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was telling the story about Agyaponmaa and how she died to save the Asante Kingdom, he was emotional.
