The drama surrounding Marcus Rashford’s future came to an end a few days ago when he signed a loan from Manchester United to Aston Villa through the end of the season.
An option to make the transfer permanent is included in the agreement. Rashford’s salary will be largely covered by Aston Villa, and the contract includes additional performance-based bonuses.
However, If Villa do not take up their option, Rashford will be expected back at Old Trafford in the summer.
“I was lucky to have a few clubs approach me, but Aston Villa was an easy decision — I really admire the way that Aston Villa have been playing this season, and the manager’s ambitions. I just want to play football and am excited to get started. I wish everyone at Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season”, Rashford wrote on social media.
Rashford hadn’t played for Manchester United since their victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League in December 2024 because head coach Ruben Amorim was worried about the player’s antics during practice.
After raising doubts about the 27-year-old’s standards, Amorim had previously stated that he would prefer to hire 63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital over Rashford.
Rashford received harsh criticism for a number of reasons, including his detrimental influence on some team members and the “fall” of Manchester United.
However, at Aston Villa, everyone is waiting for him to demonstrate whether or not he was the issue at Manchester United.
“Everyone at Manchester United wishes Marcus good luck for the rest of the season,” the 13-time Premier League champions said in a statement.
After approving Jhon Durán’s transfer to Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League in January of this year, Aston Villa was looking for a way to bolster their attack.
After Aston Villa advanced to the Champions League round of 16, coach Unai Emery can use Rashford’s extensive experience in the second half of the season.
Sources claim that Rashford’s first choice was to relocate to Barcelona. However, a deal was complicated by the LaLiga side’s financial limitations.
Rashford was also a target for Borussia Dortmund, but his salary of about £350,000 ($434,000) per week proved to be a significant obstacle.
The most productive season of Rashford’s career, 2022–2023, saw him score 30 goals; he hasn’t come close to that level since. He has scored seven goals in all competitions this season.
In total, Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for United. He has won the Europa League, two FA Cups and two Carabao Cups during his time at Old Trafford.
He has also scored 17 goals for England. He has played in two World Cups and two European Championships for his country.
