That same night, Will won Best Actor for his role in “King Richard”. In a recent interview with Trevor Noah, Smith opened up about his life after the accident and recalled what motivated him.
When Trevor asked Smith if the Oscar night was both the best and worst moment of his life, the actor said:
“Yeah, that was a horrific night as you can imagine. You know, there’s many nuances and, and complexities to it.” Smith further added, “but at the end of the day, I just lost it.”
This is not the first time the actor has spoken publicly about the incident. In July 2022, he also posted a video of himself apologizing to Chris Rock and his family. According to Smith, it was “bottle rage” that made him ‘sleepy’.
Explaining the reasons for his Oscar run, the actor said:
“It was a lot of things. It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother, you know? All of that just bubbled up in that moment. That’s not who I want to be.”
The actor went on to explain how he understands why his behavior shocked people and added,
“I understand how shocking that was for people. I was gone. That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time.”
He also asked for mercy realizing that he had learned “not to know what people do”.
During the interview, the actor also recalled the heartbreaking moment her 9-year-old nephew asked her about Chris Rock’s sleepover.
