Former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame has been charged by Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Director-General James Klutse-Avedzi with impeding efforts to hold dishonest and corrupt public officials accountable.
Klutse-Avedzi recalled years of dissatisfaction as the chairman of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in an interview with Metro TV.
“For the eight years I was Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee in the last parliament, I recommended sanctions against certain individuals, but the then Attorney-General failed to take action,” he disclosed.
He claimed that even after PAC uncovered numerous instances of financial malfeasance and public money theft, the suggestions for legal action or administrative penalties went unheeded.
His remarks rekindled worries about the inefficiency of Ghana’s anti-corruption ecosystem and sent shockwaves through the political and public sphere.
The former PAC chairman, in an interview with Kwasi Afriyie on the show, emphasized that, even though thorough committee work had uncovered multiple financial violations, executive-level obstructions to prosecution and follow-through were persistent.
