The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has come under fire from National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama for allegedly driving a large number of Ghanaians into poverty through careless borrowing and poor economic management.
Speaking at a rally in Kasoa, in the Central Region’s Awutu Senya East Constituency, the former president brought attention to the tragic tale of Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo, the late CEO of Kama Group of Companies, who suffered financially as a result of the government’s debt exchange program.
Mr. Mahama emphasized that the government’s $11.5 billion overborrowing forced the debt exchange program, which had disastrous consequences for many citizens, including the Karma Group CEO, who eventually died after losing his life savings.
Mr. Mahama informed the tense audience that the tragic event highlights the wider hardship that many Ghanaians endure under the current government.
“The man had previously come out to discuss the debt exchange program, which was only made necessary by the government’s careless borrowing.
Mr. Mahama stated,
“The man was crying on TV that he was going through hardship and just last week he died. The man said the exchange had affected his life savings.”
Mr. Mahama compared the slow progress made during his tenure with the present economic difficulties.
He used Kasoa as an example, pointing out how the development of schools, interchanges, and truck stops changed the town and and produced chances.
He said, “I wouldn’t say everything was rosy in 2016, but it was better than now.”
He promised the audience that there would be better times under an NDC government, explaining that the party’s 2024 manifesto calls for investments in manufacturing, the creative economy, and agriculture in order to revitalize the economy.
John Mahama To Smooth Out The Big Number Of His Ministers
According to Mr. Mahama, the next NDC administration was determined to establish a 24-hour economy for the purpose of expanding businesses, creating jobs, and growing the economy.
According to him, the NDC concentrated on constructing infrastructure during their previous term, including ports, roads, power plants, hospitals, schools, and postsecondary educational establishments.
Mr. Mahama contends that this system will help Ghana’s economy recover.
He claimed that during his contacts with people all over the nation, he had learned of the pressing need for responsible governance and economic reform in order to lessen the suffering of common Ghanaians.
