Idris Elba Joins Asantehene To Celebrate The Beautiful Akwasidae Festival

British and Hollywood actor Idris Elba was the next celebrity to visit Ghana. The country’s Visit Ghana agenda is still in place, as the actor had a good time in Ghana. The award-winning actor also went straight to the Ashanti region upon arrival, specifically paying the Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II in Kumasi a visit out of courtesy.

At the Manhyia Palace, Idris Elba participated in one of Ghana’s Ashanti Kingdom’s most cherished customs. On Sunday, February 6, 2023, he went to the Asantehene’s Palace to see culture at its best and see the splendor of Akwasidae in Kumasi.

The beautiful festival of Akwasidae is centered on ancestral reverence, memory, and recognition of past kings and noble deeds.

As part of the celebrations to mark this year’s first Akwasidae, thousands of people gathered at Kumasi’s Manhyia Palace to pay homage to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Drumming and dancing were part of the celebration, as were greetings, drinks, and other pleasantries.

In keeping with tradition, Otumtuo Osei Tutu rode into the Palace in a palanquin covered in kente and adorned with gold ornaments on his wrists and arms amid musket fire and drumming. Additionally present was Nana Konadu Yiadom, the Asante Kingdom’s Queen.

The Akwasidae Festival is a magnificent Asante festival with loads of culture displayed.

It also celebrates the Golden Stool and brings the Asantehene, sub-chiefs, subjects, and dignitaries together at Manhyia in Kumasi for cultural vibrancy. There were a lot of activities going on, like dancing and drumming and a cultural display.

Idris Elba had previously met with President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in Accra. At that meeting, he said that he was going to make his first movie in Ghana in December 2023.

He believes that while Africa has a wealth of film talent, it lacks studio facilities that will attract top movie stars. He claims that he intends to construct world-class movie studios in Ghana.
