
Fatimatu Abubakar, Minister of Information, has reiterated the Government’s commitment to enhancing information access, particularly in underserved communities.
Following the recent two-day Global Conference of the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) in Accra, she made the remarks.
The event, brought together policymakers, common society, and stakeholders to talk about the critical role of data in administration and feasible turn of events.
Free access to information was emphasized by Abubakar as a foundation for transparency and social accountability.
She said,
“Our discussions have not only addressed the complexities of mainstreaming access to information within the public sector but have also challenged us to consider how information can be a driver of sustainable development, transparency, and social accountability”
She explained that information access is more than just a fundamental right. Additionally, it is a potent instrument that has the potential to propel societal development, enhance governance, and empower citizens.
The Information Minister hailed the Online Records Management System (ORMS) as an important step toward ensuring that everyone in the country has easier and more efficient access to information.
She stated, “Together, we have laid the foundation for a future where information flows freely, empowering citizens and enhancing governance”
Hon. Abubakar also thanked UNESCO, the Right to Information Commission, civil society, partners in the media, and everyone else who contributed to the conference’s success.
Additionally, she acknowledged their unwavering dedication to facilitating open governance through information access.

The Minister spoke about inclusiveness and transparency in government.
She concluded,
“Let us always remember that information is the lifeblood of democracy, the bridge between governments and the governed”
Ghana’s current efforts to improve the free flow of information have been strengthened by the 2024 IDUAI, positioning it as a key driver of democratic governance and sustainable development.
