Argentina forward Julian Alvarez scored against Canada during the Copa América Semifinals to become the fourth player to score in both the World Cup and CONMEBOL Copa América Semifinal.

Lionel Messi, Romario, and Diego Forlan are the other two players to accomplish this.

The 24-year-old striker started his team’s Semifinal match against Canada, and Coach Scaloni’s decision to start him was rewarding.

Alvarez started the first two games, against Canada and Chile, before Lautaro Martinez, who is currently leading the competition in goals scored, took his place in the lineup.

However, in the 23′ minute, Scaloni’s faith in Alvarez was rewarded when Rodrigo De Paul made a beautiful pass through the Canadian defense to Alavrez, who made no mistakes in front of the goal and scored the match’s first goal.

Alavrez’s goal not only propelled Argentina into the Copa América final but also established a new record. Alvarez has scored in both the CONMEBOL Copa América Semifinals and Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup Semifinal victory over Croatia.

He is now one of only four players to have scored in both competitions’ semifinals, joining Lionel Messi, Diego Forlan, Romario, and Romario of Brazil.

Similar to Alvarez, Messi also scored goals against Canada in the continental semifinal this year and Croatia in the World Cup semifinal. The great Argentine player also scored in the Copa América Semifinal in 2007 against Mexico and the Semifinal in 2016 against the United States.

Romario scored twice in Brazil’s 7-0 victory over Peru at the 1997 CONMEBOL Copa América, including the lone goal in Brazil’s Semifinal victory over Sweden at the FIFA World Cup in 1994.

For Diego Forlan, the Uruguayan striker then scored against Brazil in the 2007 CONMEBOL Copa América Semifinals and against the Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Semifinals.
