Kenya is the latest African nation to announce a visa program for digital nomads. Digital nomads can now work almost anywhere.
On October 2, President William Ruto made the Digital Nomad Work Permit for Kenya official at the Magical Kenya Travel Expo.
According to the president, the visa is “specifically designed to welcome global digital professionals, allowing them to live and work in Kenya while enjoying the country’s high-quality lifestyle and natural beauty.”
The Digital Nomad Work Permit is intended for remote workers and is a component of Kenya’s larger strategy to boost tourism, employment, and foreign investment.
According to Statista, the country received 870,465 visitors in 2021, which increased to 1,483,752 visitors in 2022 and over 1.9 million in 2023.
Dr. Ruto stated that the objective is to attract 5 million visitors annually and establish Kenya as a must-visit destination by 2027.
Candidates for Kenya’s digital nomad visa must possess the following:
• a valid passport
• proof of remote work out side of Kenya
• proof of accommodation within Kenya
• a clean criminal record
The minimum annual income for the visa is about $53,922. When the work permit will be available, how long it will be valid, and how much it will cost are still unknown.
Kenya is not the only African nation with a visa for digital nomads. Mauritius, Cape Verde, Seychelles, and Namibia are among the continent’s other nations that have taken similar initiatives.
Global Tourism Experiencing A Strong Recovery In 2024
The Kenyan government announced that, in addition to the Digital Nomad Work Permit, it would also grant visa-free entry to foreign nationals for up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes.
President Ruto also unveiled the Transit and Long Connection Travelers Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) as part of that new visa-free policy.
It will make it possible for people who have long layovers at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to leave and see Kenya instead of waiting in the terminals.
According to Dr. Ruto, the eTA’s objective is to encourage tourists to visit Kenya.
