Ahead of the general elections in 2024, Movement for Change presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen recently voiced his strong disapproval of former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s support of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His disappointment has actually sparked a wide range of responses in Ghana, including from media figures like Nana Frimpong Ziega of Kessben FM, who was formerly Alan Kyeremanten’s media coordinator.
In response to the ongoing controversy, Nana Frimpong stated that he finds it incomprehensible that Alan should be upset with former President Kuffuor for supporting Bawumia. He said, Kuffuor is incapable of doing otherwise.
Nana Frimpong went on to say that he [Kuffuor] had no choice but to act in this way because he is a stateman and a founding member of the NPP.
“For John Atta-Mills, former President Rawlings did the same,” he said. In order to win the 2008 elections, he spent 8 months campaigning for Atta-Mills to be his successor”.
According to him, former President Kuffuor cannot sit idly without promoting the party’s candidate.
Speaking on Kessben FM on Tuesday, November 19, Nana Frimpong claimed that Mr. Kuffuor knew Bawumia just like he knew Alan.
He said during the former president’s tenure, he appointed Dr. Bawumia as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. Therefore, if Alan claims that he worked with Mr. Kuffuor and that his endorsement of Bawumia damages his reputation, then he doesn’t understand it.
He recounted how Dr. Bawumia worked with Mr. Kuffuor to redenominate the country’s currency at that time.
He also revealed that, Mr. Kuffuor had previously portrayed and projected Alan Kyeremanten by excluding a few other individuals who were deemed noteworthy as well.
“Former President Kuffuor has taken a lot of bullets for you Alan Kyeremanten. Despite the insults, spins, articles people wrote about Kuffuor to ridicule him for endorsing you, he still stood by his stance”, Nana Frimpong said.
Nana Frimpong claims that what Kuffuor did, sparked the conflict between the Akyems and Asantes.
Because Mr. Kuffuor has previously suffered at the hands of the masses due to Alan Kyeremanten, Nana Frimpong stated that he expects him to remain composed regarding this matter.
Because people are politicizing the issue and exaggerating it, he went to beg Mr. Alan Kyeremanten to be extremely careful with his words.
What Started the Discussion:
During an interview with selected journalists on Sunday, November 17, former President Kufuor urged Ghanaians to rally behind Dr. Bawumia in the December polls, describing him as the best candidate to lead the country.
“Given the current global circumstances, I firmly believe that Ghana’s economy will experience significant improvement if Bawumia is elected as President. With divine guidance, he is capable of delivering on this promise, and I encourage you to support his candidacy.
“I have observed his remarkable abilities in economic enhancement during my tenure, as he was integral to the Bank of Ghana’s team under Governor Dr. Paul Acquah, contributing to the revival of the currency.”
