Lawsuits Against Those Who Tamper With ECG’s Meters Begins

During a press conference on Monday, February 3, the Electricity Company of Ghana addressed a concern regarding their installed meters in various homes and offices.

ECG disclosed during the press conference that meter tampering has been widespread, especially in Accra.

The organization claims that about 10% of the 70,000 installed meters in Dansoman alone have been tampered with, leading them to underreport electricity consumption.

As a result, David Boadi Asamoah, the Acting Managing Director of ECG, has issued a strong warning, stressing that anyone found involved in such unlawful activities will be subject to the full force of the law.

“We will conduct thorough investigations, and there are laws in this country. After our investigations, law enforcement agencies like the police will take over.

“Once the police complete their work, the case will proceed to court, where the law on the case will be applied because this is stealing it’s a criminal offence,” he stated.

He further assured that no one involved whether a contractor, electrician, or customer would be spared.

“I must assure you, that the ECG will not spare anybody, being it a contractor, an electrician or whosoever if you are caught in this you will not be spared, so from what we have seen, we will run after them and the beneficiary will also have their share ”

ECG’s operations are being negatively impacted by such unpatriotic acts, according to David Boadi Asamoah, who said that collusion between customers and certain contract workers to manipulate meters is jeopardizing the company’s financial stability and, consequently, the economic growth of the nation.

He lamented how customers’ unpatriotic actions, such as conspiring with ECG’s contract workers to cause meters to malfunction, are impairing their business operations and, consequently, undermining the state’s gains.

To reduce losses and increase efficiency, the government has started plans to privatize ECG. Even though opinions on this topic are divided, ECG is currently having trouble because of a lot of illegal activity and power theft.

Mr. Asamoah, the Acting Managing Director, demanded a strong strategy to reduce system losses.
