Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski proceeded with his voracious spat infront of goal by scoring two times while Memphis Depay also got on the scoresheet as the Catalans won convincingly by 3-0 win at home to Elche in LaLiga on Saturday September 17.
The win took Barca top of the standings on 16 points from six games although Real Madrid, who are on 15 points, can get back to the highest point assuming that they win away to Atletico Madrid in their next game on Sunday September 18.
Barcelona’s job against the league’s bottom side was made simpler when Elche focus back Gonzalo Verdu was shipped off in the fourteenth minute for pulling Lewandowski’s shirt as the striker was going to arrive at the area.
Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 34th minute, showing up somewhere down deep to thump in a cross from Alejandro Balde and score for the fifth back to back game in LaLiga.
Memphis scored a beautiful goal to double Barcelona’s lead in the 41st minute while Lewandowski got his second from the get-go in the final part, jumping inside the area after Memphis had contended energetically to win back the ball.
“It was an important win. Elche were very defensive at the start with five at the back, but we also lost the ball too much.
“In the end, it was a slightly more easier game than we expected. It would have been more complicated against 11. After the red card it becomes more positional. We enjoyed outselves in the second half.”, Barcelona coach Xavi said.
