Lionel Messi, captain of Inter Miami CF, has been selected as the Major League Soccer (MLS) Player of the Month for the month of October 2024.
With six goals in the month—five goals and one assist—Messi was tied for first place in MLS. His five goals were two more than any other player in the league.
On October 2, the MLS MVP nominee notched the game-winning goal against the Columbus Crew and the game-winning assist against the New England Revolution on Decision Day.
Messi became the first player in MLS history to score three goals and assist in a substitute appearance just a few days ago.
With the victory, Inter Miami surpassed the Revolution’s previous single-season point record of 73 (set in 2021) to set the MLS single-season point record with 74.
Despite only playing 1,485 minutes, Messi contributed a season-high 36 goals (20 goals, 16 assists) for the MLS, which was the fifth most in league history.
He became the only player in MLS history to score at least 20 goals and 14 assists in a single season when he joined Carlos Vela in 2019 (34 goals, 15 assists) and Sebastian Giovinco in 2015 (22 goals, 16 assists).
In Messi’s 19 MLS appearances this season, he created a goal or assist 15 of those and had various goal commitments 11 unique times.
In those 19 games where Messi was on the field, Inter Miami went 12-1-6. Alongside the MLS points record, Inter Miami became the third team in league history to win 22 matches in at least 11 wins at home and 11 wins on the road (excluding the shootout era).

Messi has been named MLS Player of the Month twice this season, once for his April performances and another for this month’s performance.
Inter Miami joined Los Angeles Football Club in 2019 and Atlanta United in 2018 as the third team in the last decade to win the award three times in a single season.
In a process that is carried out by MLS Communications, a panel of select members of the national media vote for the MLS Player of the Month.
