
Historic top scorer Luis Suárez of Uruguay’s “La Celeste” has announced the end of his 17-year tenure with the national team.
The CONMEBOL Copa América champion and leading scorer in the 2011 competition was Luis Suárez. He will play Paraguay in his final Uruguay match before an official retirement.
At 37 years of age, the striker has announced the end of a golden stint in the Uruguayan national team.
“The Friday will be my last match with the national team. It’s something I’ve been thinking about: this is the right time,” said “El Pistolero” in a press conference.
On February 7, 2007, Suárez made his debut with “La Celeste” against Colombia. He participated in 142 games in total: 69 wins, 41 draws, and 32 losses. He is the Uruguayan national team’s all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 11,191 minutes (one goal every 162 minutes).

Suárez won Uruguay’s first CONMEBOL Copa América in Argentina in 2011 with four goals, making him one of the tournament’s top scorers.
He will say his goodbyes on the field after the World Cup Qualifiers on Friday.
The “Pistolero” will make his final appearance with “La Celeste” on Friday, September 6, when they play against Paraguay at the Estadio Centenario.
With 13 points, Uruguay is currently in second place in the World Cup 2026 Qualifiers.
