The Ghana Medical Care Trust, commonly known as “MahamaCares,” is a project that President John Dramani Mahama has initiated.
Financial assistance for people with chronic illnesses such as kidney failure, diabetes, cancer, sickle cell disease, hypertension, and heart disease is the goal of this trust.
A larger plan to improve healthcare delivery in Ghana includes the creation of the Ghana Medical Care Trust. Significant components of this approach consist of:
• Ensuring timely release of payments to service providers and allocating additional funds to finance healthcare for Ghanaians.
• Providing free healthcare services from Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds to polyclinics in the short to medium term.
• Restoring prompt employment and timely deployment of health workers across the country.
• Plans include building a state-of-the-art 500-bed Specialist Children’s Hospital and Fertility Centre in Accra, as well as establishing modern dialysis centers in regions lacking such facilities.
• Encouraging regular health check-ups at local pharmacies to facilitate early detection of conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes.
The initiative will recruite community health volunteers across the country. By making house-to-house visits, these volunteers will keep an eye on the health of the residents. Their goal is to identify and treat health problems early on, preventing minor illnesses from becoming more serious.
