Maria Shriver has openly talked about the upheaval she went through after learning of her ex-husband Arnold Schwarzenegger’s relationship with their housekeeper, Mildred Baena, which produced a son, Joseph Baena.
Shriver recounts a severe breakdown in her next poetry book, “I Am Maria,” recounting how she sat by herself on the floor of a hotel room, overcome with terror and sorrow. In that instant, she decided that this would not be the end of her, but rather the start of something new.
Their 25-year marriage ended in 2011 after Schwarzenegger’s infidelity was revealed. Shriver describes how she was engulfed in grief, confusion, anger, fear, sadness, and anxiety, leaving her unsure of who she was and where she fit in the world.
