Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu and anti-galamsey activist Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey have stepped up their attempts to hold Chairman Wontumi, also known as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, responsible for alleged illicit mining activities.

Concerned about the protracted delay in looking into Akonta Mining Ltd., a business owned by Chairman Wontumi, which is alleged to have engaged in illicit mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, they filed a renewed petition on February 24, 2025, to the Director-General of the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

On March 18, 2025, Martin Kpebu stated on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show that they had been waiting for the then-IGP Dampare to respond to their initial petition since 2022, but he had been extremely indifferent to it. The move did not seem to bother him.

There has not been any news since the initial complaint was submitted on October 13, 2022. Emphasizing that the case seemed to be “unnecessarily delaying”.

The petitioners urged the CID to move quickly to expedite the investigation and bring charges against individuals guilty for environmental degradation.

Chairman Wontumi has responded by accusing Martin Kpebu of disseminating lies and misleading information and has threatened legal action against him. He threatened to take legal action against Kpebu if he persisted in his accusations.

The circumstance highlights Ghana’s continuous fight against illicit mining and the difficulties in holding powerful people responsible for environmental infractions.
