
Memphis Depay has spoken about his decision to find out about his Ghanaian roots and how he felt when he first saw it. The Corinthians player also talked about how powerful the Ashantis are.
As indicated by the Dutch forward, he didn’t get to see his roots until he was 23 years of age. He said he never returned, and when he first returned was the point at which he was only two years.
In an interview with ESPN, Memphis said he was not raised by his father, but that didn’t have a bad impact on him. Rather, it built his character.
“When I went back to Ghana, I started to find out about my history from my African part, because my Dutch part I know. So for my African part, it was quite powerful. The blood that I carry is from Ashanti region. Actually, it’s a tribe in Ghana which is powerful. We are warriors, and If I am in Ghana, you have beautiful places in Ghana. Very rich people, but you have also very poor people.
He continued:
Controversials like this. And I go in both places and I try to help because am blessed with some gifts and stuffs like that. And that’s why I am connected. I am feeling connected and I see the similarities here. If you have a platform like I do, I try to speak on it. It try not to shy away because okay you see me with the suit, nice tie whatever, but I am also doing behind the scenes a lot of ground work….”
The 30 year-old player, who is also singer was born in Moordrecht, Netherlands. He recently completed a move to Corinthians, signing a deal that will keep him at the Brazilian club until December 2026.
