Memphis University To Extend Its Scholarship Programmes For Ghanaian Students

The University of Memphis, located in the United States, has informed Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II of its plans to expand its scholarship programs for Ghanaian students.

During a courtesy visit to the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Dr. David Russomanno, the university’s Executive Vice President and Provost, disclosed this information and presented Otumfuo with a citation.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Asante Kingdom, proposed Ghana as the location for the first African campus of the University of Memphis (UofM).

He stated to Dr. David Russomanno, “I am waiting for the campus.”

Additionally, His Majesty suggested providing lecturers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with a scholarship to attend doctoral programs in Memphis and improve their skills.

“We seek that our lecturers and professors here will have the opportunity to further their education and come back… The secretariat doesn’t have the money to match the cost. What I want to hear is that next year we have so many students benefiting from this programme and then the professors there would tell me how many of them are going for PhDs.” Otumfuo remarked.

Dr. Russomanno mentioned plans to partner with Ghana to provide students with IT courses as part of their plan to increase the number of IT workers in response to the proposal.

“We are prepared to offer the online program to deepen our partnership based on how we can best complement the interest and capabilities of the participants”.

Dr Russomanno is in Ghana as part of efforts to expand its partnership with Ghana.
