Mikel Obi’s Invitation To South Korea, Retirement And More..

Nigeria recently celebrated its Independence Day, and former Super Eagles of Nigeria midfielder Mikel Obi additionally joined the ‘party’ at his current base in South Korea.

The 35-year-old Obi announced his retirement from international football half a month ago.

After his announcement, Obi headed out to South Korea to start life after football there.

As per Obi, he was beautifully welcomed by The Envoy of Nigeria to the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Ali Mohammed Magashi for the Independence celebrations.

The former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi was also invited to celebrate the 42nd commemoration of the Diplomatic Relations with the Republic of Korea.

That said, Mikel Obi posted a video on his official social media handles about his trip.

Alongside the video from Obi was a message that read,

“This has been a very productive visit for me, the people of South Korea have been nothing but good to me, the love is really overwhelming and I do not take it for granted.

“A very special thank you to His Excellency Ali Mohammed Magashi for inviting me to be a part of this celebration. #proudlynigerian.”

Obi is viewed as one of Nigeria’s best football exports with an unimaginable accomplishment in Europe too.

Mikel began his career with local club Plateau United, before joining Norwegian club Lyn at the age of 17 in 2004. The 35 years year old player stayed with Chelsea for 11 years, before moving to China with Tianjin TEDA in 2017.

After two years in China, he returned to England on a short-term deal with Middlesbrough, before joining Trabzonspor on a free transfer in July 2019.

Mikel moved back to England in August 2020 joining Stoke City. In a 14-year international career between 2005 and 2019, he played 91 times for Nigeria, scoring six goals.
