Minister of Education Talks About Important Topics Impacting the University of Ghana

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, a UG alumnus and Minister for Education

A delegation led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo congratulated Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, a UG alumnus and Minister for Education, on his new position.

By looking into ways to work together and fortify their relationships with the Ministry, they also talked about important issues that the University faces, such as funding for research, timely staff replacements, especially for those President Mahama appointed to head state institutions, infrastructure development, and financial difficulties.

Prof. Amfo emphasized the significance of accelerating infrastructure development to address the University’s accommodation difficulties and reaffirmed UG’s willingness to support government initiatives with expertise available at the University.

Pro Vice Chancellor (ASA) Prof. Gordon Awandare emphasized the necessity of operationalizing the National Research Fund and the necessity of universities handling scholarship disbursement directly because they have inclusive and strong scholarship management procedures in place.

In contrast, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu assured the delegation that higher education funding would be given priority in the next National Education Sector Reforms Dialogue and reaffirmed his commitment to reforming higher education. He also promised to work with other stakeholders to operationalize the National Research Fund, advocate for staff replacements, and look into funding for projects that have stalled.
