The Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has assured that all mobile network operators in Ghana will own shares in the newly created Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC).
The NGIC has been awarded a 5G licence and is expected to launch 5G mobile broadband services in Ghana in the last quarter of this year. This drive additionally aims to convey affordable 5G mobile broadband services the nation over.
“They have also invited all Mobile Network Operators to be partners in the consortium. So every mobile network operator operating in this country has been invited to be part of the consortium,” the minister made this known while addressing the media on Thursday (30 May).
“The conversation started with some and it’s continuing with the rest of them. So no mobile network operator in this country will be left out. They will all own shares in NGIC. Other private investors who also express interest would also be part of this. The Government of Ghana will retain a small percentage in this consortium,“ Owusu-Ekuful said.
“The government is not paying for this network to be deployed. The consortium will look for its funding and I’m happy that they’ve chosen reputable technology partners that will deliver world-class, cutting-edge technology for us,” she added.
