‘Most Entertainment Pundits Have No Outstanding Industry Experience’

There have been recent discussions regarding the reasons why Ghana’s showbiz industry, particularly the music space, appears to be lagging behind.

Music producer JMJ takes aim at critics and pundits in the Ghanaian entertainment industry. Numerous entertainment pundits have shared their thoughts on the issue about what can be done with some intervention to grow the industry.

Subsequently, one of the top music executive and producer JMJ has strongly weeped over the pattern of poorly informed individuals being hosted on television and on radio as entertainment pundits.

As indicated by JMJ, media houses inviting unprofessionals on radio and television programs to examine issues about the country’s showbiz space is one of the major problems affecting the industry. He stated that this has significantly diminished the value of showbusiness in Ghana.

As one of the best producers in the country, JMJ is behind the many hits from stars like Kaakie Samini and etc.. He said that he sometimes feels embarrassed telling his close friends that he works in the industry.

He expressed his disappointment in several media houses for allowing such amateur entertainment pundits to spew rumors about showbiz of which they have no knowledge.

During the debate that took place on GTV’s ‘Record Label Contracts: What A Musician Must Know‘, he expressed that when there is a medical problem, they bring health experts.

“When there is an agric conversation, they bring farmers [and] people who are well-versed in the matter”.

But it is not same in showbiz when personnel are outlined for industry conversations.

“…sometimes when you hear some people talking on TV, and they talking on behalf of all of us, it is saddening.

“You ask: ‘What is the reason you are qualified to be on this set?’,” he quizzed.

JMJ recalled “back then” at media establishments such as “GBC here,” programme producers knew “it was a risk to put a layman on” to mislead the public.

He asked his audience to imagine, “they brought a fake doctor here and he starts giving wrong prescription and then the innocent person at home just swallows it”.

“Entities like GBC know the danger so they’ll make sure they go for people who are well-versed in the conversation,” the JR Music founder stressed.

Conversely, in the entertainment industry, “we are the only people that you’d hear [introduce someone for a conversation as]: ‘He’s a pundit, he’s this, he’s a music critic,” etc. Meanwhile, he intimated, the individual has no education or relevant industry experience for the topic.

“And that’s how we grew our industry. That’s why its value is minus zero today,” he concluded.
