In response to the growing cost of power, Akim Swedru MP Kennedy Osei Nyarko has stated that the burden of the recently imposed tariffs is worse than that of the widely criticized 1% Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy).
The Member of Parliament explained the effects of the new tariff adjustments that were announced for the first quarter review window in a Facebook post.
“If you used to spend GH¢100 on electricity every month, note that from today you will be spending GH¢114.75 every month,” he wrote.
Then, using the analogy, he emphasized how much more of a financial burden he believes Ghanaians are under than the E-Levy, which caused a huge deal of public outrage when it was first implemented by the erstwhile government.
He went on to say,
“Kindly note that the GH¢14.75 increase in the cost of electricity is higher than the 1% E-Levy you will be paying on the same GH¢100 you complained about”.
On social media, the comment has generated debate. While some people concur that growing utility costs are becoming a more urgent problem than taxes, others have questioned the point of comparing two distinct expenditures.
