MTN Group Has Announced Changes To Its Leadership

In order to address succession, operational execution, and the advancement of the Ambition 2025 strategy, MTN Group has announced significant leadership changes.

Changes in the Leadership of Operating Companies:

Due to Djibril Ouattara’s early retirement, Mitwa Ng’ambi, the CEO of MTN Cameroon, will take over the same role at MTN Côte d’Ivoire on March 1, 2025.

One of Djibril’s major contributions to MTN was his leadership of MTN Congo-Brazzaville. For the next few months, he will help Mitwa through her transition.

Having been the CEO of MTN Cameroon since September 2022, Mitwa also brings transformational leadership and more than 15 years of telecom experience. Additionally, she chairs the board of Mobile Money Corporation, MTN’s Cameroonian fintech subsidiary.

Mitwa was the CEO of MTN Rwanda before her position in Cameroon, where she successfully oversaw the company’s license renewal, expansion, and listing on the Rwanda Stock Exchange.

She previously held executive roles at Tigo in Senegal and Airtel Tigo in Ghana. Mitwa’s background and performance history will help MTN Côte d’Ivoire expand and improve.

With effect from March 1, 2025, Wanda Matandela, the Chief Commercial Operations Officer of MTN South Africa, has been named the new CEO of MTN Cameroon.

Wanda spearheaded the company’s turnaround after joining MTN in 2018 as Chief Enterprise Business Officer. He has held strategic positions in the FMCG and financial services industries during his more than 20 years of experience, which includes more than 13 years in telecom.

Wanda is a member of the boards of MTN Rwanda PLC and Supersonic (Pty) Ltd. As he builds on the high impact and energy generated under Mitwa’s leadership, his solid background in stakeholder management and business will be crucial. He will bring fresh perspectives and capabilities to propel Cameroon’s growth.

Leadership at digital infrastructure business:

Mazen Mroue, MTN Group Chief Technology and Information Officer (GCTIO), will take on new duties as CEO of Digital Infrastructure (Infraco) on January 1, 2025.

In addition to carrying out this data center strategy, this new position will integrate Bayobab’s mobility and fiber businesses, positioning MTN Group for growth and profitability in the development of AI throughout Africa.

He will continue to serve as a member of the Group Executive Committee and report to the Group President and CEO in this dual capacity.

Mazen joined MTN in 1998 and has since held a number of high-level positions in the Group’s regional operations in the Middle East and Africa, including CEO and COO positions in several operating companies. Additionally, he has been a board member of several MTN Group companies.

Mazen is well-positioned to carry out this dual mandate because of his solid operational and technological background as well as his proven delivery record.

With immediate effect, Bayobab’s current CEO, Frédéric Schepens, will be leaving the company.
