In order to become the first $1 million player in women’s sports history, Chelsea Women’s team signed Naomi Girma from the NWSL team San Diego Wave. She becomes the first January signing for Sonia Bompastor.
In west London, Girma has now agreed to a four-and-a-half-year contract. As Chelsea looks to win their first Champions League title in addition to maintaining their domestic dominance, this deal is viewed as a long-term acquisition.
Emma Hayes, the current manager of the USA and a former Blues boss, has called Girma’s move a good one. According to her, the 24-year-old is the best defender she has ever seen.
Racheal Kundananji’s move from Madrid CFF to Bay FC broke the previous record of £695,000 ($860,000) with a deal of approximately £890,000 ($1.1m) agreed upon by the two clubs.
The move follows Chelsea’s January acquisition of Mayra Ramirez, a striker for Levante, for a British record £384,000 plus up to £42,600 in add-ons.
Since making her debut in April 2022, the center-back has made 44 appearances for the USA. She won gold with Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games, earning high appreciation from manager Emma Hayes, a former Chelsea manager.

Additionally, the 24-year-old was named the 2023 US Soccer Female Player of the Year.
Paul Green, the women’s football director for the Blues, responded to the signing said:
“Naomi is a world-class defender who is now coming into the prime years of her career. Her composure on the ball, ability to read the game coupled with her pace and athleticism will add top quality to an already very talented squad.
“Naomi has showcased her talent in the NWSL winning various individual awards and delivered on the international stage for the USA, including this summer winning a gold medal at the Olympics.
“She is undoubtedly ready for this next step in her career and we are delighted it will be with Chelsea.”
At the age of 24, Naomi Girma is regarded as someone who can only get better because of her timing, positioning, strength, and athleticism, which make her a composed yet nearly unbeatable presence for both club and country.
