Nawaf Salam Steps Down As A Member Of ICJ

As of January 14, 2025, Judge Nawaf Salam, the President of the International Court of Justice, has resigned from his position as a member of the Court.

On February 5, 2027, his tenure as the Court’s President and Member was set to end.

The date for the General Assembly and Security Council to elect his successor will be set by the Security Council in compliance with Article 14 of the Court’s Statute.

The judge who is elected will serve out Judge Salam’s term, as stipulated by Article 15 of the Statute.

Judge Salam joined the Court on February 6, 2018, and on February 6, 2024, he was elected President. Prior to becoming a member of the Court, Judge Salam was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Lebanon to the United Nations in New York, a position he held from July 2007 to December 2017.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the UnitedNations. The Court is composed of 15 judges elected for a nine-year term by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations.

The seat of the Court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands).
