NCA Pulls Plug On Asaase Radio In A Big Sweep Against Violating Stations

Due to regulatory violations, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has mandated the immediate closure of Asaase radio including 62 other radio stations.

Happy FM is one of the stations impacted, along with others.

Numerous radio stations in Ghana have been shut down for a variety of reasons, such as breaking the law, not renewing their licenses, operating without a valid authorization, transmitting more content than is allowed, and not paying the license cost.

The NCA has started implementing the regulatory measures against the defaulting firms as soon as possible after receiving the instruction.

28 stations are in operation with authorizations that have expired. Some of them have continued to broadcast illegally in violation of Regulation 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act 2008 despite being ordered to stop by the NCA in 2024.

Fourteen other radio stations received letters of revocation for not establishing within two years of the authorization date. They were then asked to undergo inspection, but the procedure has not been finished because of a number of errors, which they must fix but continue to broadcast. Regulation 54 of the 2011 Electronic Communications Regulations is broken by those stations.

Thirteen other stations have asked for and been granted permission to continue operating; however, they have not paid the full temporary authorization fee and, as a result, do not have the legal right to do so.

The provisional authorization fee for seven additional stations has been paid, but final authorisation is yet to be issued and have not fulfilled the requirement of Regulation 54.

All the affected stations numbering 62 do not currently hold valid authorisation to commence operation and may only resume operations once all regulatory infractions have been addressed and rectified.
