NDC Secures Supermajority In Parliament After Akwatia By-Election Victory

Following the recent by-election in Akwatia, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) further cemented its supermajority in Ghana’s parliament.

Even before the Akwatia election, the majority of seats are held by the current government. With 184 seats out of 276 (67%), they already had a resounding majority and had surpassed the two-thirds requirement. Four independents were seated alongside the 88 seats controlled by the NPP.

Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC defeated Solomon Asumadu of the NPP in the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025, with 18,199 votes to 15,235, while the LPG candidate received 82 votes. With this win, the NDC now holds 183 parliamentary seats, while the NPP only holds 87.

The NDC maintains a substantial supermajority, ensuring its parliamentary domination, whether it holds 184 or 183 members.

Although the margin did not change much in terms of numbers, analysts concur that the victory has political and symbolic significance.

In Ghana’s parliament, the NDC still has a supermajority. The Akwatia victory strengthens their dominant position rather than altering it.
