
In accordance with the University of Ghana Act 2010 (Act 806), newly appointed members of the University’s Governing Council were administered the Oath of Office and Oath of Secrecy by the university’s chancellor, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse.
Madam Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, the Chairperson of the Council, and government appointees Dr. Alhassan Andani, Dr. Kwesi Amakye-Boateng, Ms. Precious Kyei Bonsu, and Dr. Abdul Karim Hatsu are among the new members. Mr. John Dadzie-Mensah, who represented the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and Dr. Inusah Abdul-Nasiru, who represented the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), were also sworn in.
The swearing-in ceremony took place in the Cedi Conference Centre on the main campus of the university during an orientation session for the Council.
In her speech, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse urged the Council Members to act proactively and strategically to guarantee that higher education keeps up its relevant response to Ghana’s urgent problems and changing requirements.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, and her leadership team were praised by the Chairperson of Council, Madam Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, for creating a daring Strategic Plan (2024–2029) that she called a timely roadmap. “I said,” she said.
“This orientation has been deliberately structured to provide us with the necessary tools to govern with wisdom, to deliberate with clarity and to act with courage.”
The new Council members were greeted by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amfo, who also urged their cooperation in furthering the University’s overall goal. She emphasized how important the university is to the country.

She emphasised the University’s role as a vital national asset and highlighted the importance of strong, effective governance in realising its aspirations.
The full-day orientation featured presentations on the University’s governance structure, strategic direction, financial management systems and standard operating procedures. These sessions were designed to equip members with the knowledge and context needed to effectively steer the affairs of the institution.
