Nigerian Senate Shot Dead In A Horrifying Attack

On Wednesday, February 22, a Nigerian senatorial candidate was on his way home from a campaign rally in the southern state of Enugu when he was shot dead and his body burnt beyond recognition.

The death of Oyibo Chukwu, a member of the Labour Party, occurred just a few days before the general elections on Saturday, which are being referred to as the most competitive elections in the country in 24 years.

Local media reports that his assistants, who were with him at the time of the attack, were also shot dead before their car with the bodies inside caught fire.

The following is what Chijioke Edeoga, a candidate for the state’s governorship, had to say:

“Our party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties that felt threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state and are afraid they may lose the Saturday’s election”

The Labour party has not commented on the attack, but Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, has been urging supporters to vote for the party in their numbers.
