Obscenity In The Media Is Warned By NMC

The National Media Commission (NMC) has issued a strong warning to media outlets across the nation, urging them to refrain from broadcasting obscene contents.

Organizations that violate regulations could face penalties, according to the commission.

On Thursday, October 31, Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo, Chairman of the NMC, addressed the regulatory meeting of the commission on offensive media content with radio and television stations.

During the meeting, he voiced concern regarding the programming choices made by a number of media outlets and called for increased responsibility in broadcasting.

According to the NMC report, it received close to 9,000 complaints this year about things like loan fraud, money laundering, and sexual content. More than 40 media organizations were reportedly involved.

The publication of explicit content was cited against several of these stalwarts.

Oyerepa TV, one of the culprits specifically mentioned in the report, was unhappy with being singled out among the others.

However, the commission offered a justification for its actions, suggesting that it might refer the matter to the National Communications Authority (NCA) for consideration of revoking the station’s license and stating that the level of obscenity broadcast by the network posed significant harm.

That being said, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) questioned the NCA’s commitment to broadcasting standards and criticized it for not providing a clear roadmap for the digital migration process.

The NCA responded by reassuring the public of its proactive role in sector monitoring and regulation. From this point forward, the commission has pledged to exercise its authority against those who violate regulations.
