Nemanja Matic, a former midfielder for Manchester United who currently plays for Lyon, has called goalie Andre Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history.” This statement was made prior to Thursday’s Europa League quarterfinal between Manchester United and Lyon, Matic’s current squad. When Onana performed poorly during the game and made two crucial mistakes that resulted in a 2-2 draw, the tension increased.
Discussions about Onana’s challenges have persisted all season. Interestingly, since the 2018–19 season, he has committed seven mistakes that resulted in goals in the UEFA Champions League, more than any other goalie during that time.
His job at Manchester United is under increased scrutiny as a result of the criticism of Matic and Onana’s recent performances, particularly as the squad moves through pivotal phases in European competitions.
Despite his challenges, Ruben Amorim of Manchester United claims he is “very confident” in André Onana, even though he made mistakes in the draw with Lyon. “It can happen with any player,” he said.
Thiago Almada’s free kick in the 25th minute bounced in after Onana’s first error. The second goal was equalized by Rayan Cherki after a feeble push in the last seconds of extra time. Following Leny Yoro’s equalizer in the 87th minute, Joshua Zirkzee’s header put United ahead at that point.
Manchester United Is Going Through A Difficult Time
Amorim was asked what he would say to Onana.
“Nothing,” said the head coach. “We have training, go with [Jorge] Vital [goalkeeping coach] and we deal with that – really natural. That can happen with any player. There’s nothing I can say to André in this moment that will help. The most important thing is to be natural and then, when the time comes, I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in André.
“It can happen, if you play football, you play a lot of games, you can make mistakes. If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and these last months.”
“It’s normal. I felt the dressing room really quiet, we draw away in Europe, that is always hard, but the team is suffering, we need to change that.”The tie is poised before Thursday’s second leg at Old Trafford. “The other thing is we have one more game to change everything and that should be our focus,” Amorim said.
