For the ninth year in a row, Oxford University has been voted the best university in the world.
The university has held the top spot in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the longest period of time among the 21 annual editions, having done so since 2017.
With a record 2,092 universities ranked from 115 countries, the school has once again topped the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in the biggest and most inclusive year to date.
The only other universities that have topped the rankings are Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
This accomplishment is a tribute to Oxford’s outstanding faculty, researchers, and staff who produce globally influential research and offer outstanding teaching and learning standards.
The top research-intensive universities in the world are ranked according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. And this is the real global scope of Oxford’s work, which has allowed it to hold the top spot for an unprecedented nine years.
Oxford outperforms its world-class counterparts in the US in a number of performance metrics, including teaching, research, and industry collaboration. However, it is particularly notable for the breadth of its international research partnerships and its capacity to attract top talent from around the world.
The World Rankings is a thorough study that evaluates over 2,800 top research universities and includes an academic survey with over 90,000 responses from around the globe. More than 18 million research papers have more than 150 million citations examined.

The ranking is based on 18 specific metrics, covering all core missions of global, research-led universities, incorporated into five ‘pillars’: research environment (including income and reputation data); research excellence; the teaching environment; international outlook (such as research collaboration); and industry (including industry income and patent citations).
Although Oxford excels in every area, it has an edge because of its global perspective and patent citations, which are extra metrics added to the industry score.
On the evening of October 8, 2024, at the World Academic Summit, the rankings were revealed to about 500 guests from around the world.
Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology came in second and third, respectively, behind Oxford in the THE World Rankings 2025.
