Oxford University Receives £8.4 Million Gift For A New Professorship In Global Primary Care

With a magnificent £8.4 million donation from the Fondation Docteur Sadok Besrour, Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences is set to expand its work in global primary care with a new center and professorship.

The University of Oxford’s Besrour Centre for Global Primary Care and the new Dr. Sadok Besrour Professorship of Global Primary Care will be established thanks to a kind donation of more than £8.4 million from the Fondation Docteur Sadok Besrour.

The new Center will concentrate on expanding access to high-quality, evidence-based primary care globally. It is housed in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences (NDPCHS), which is well-known throughout the world for its research on health systems and community-based care.

Additionally, the financing will finance administrative assistance for the Center, an annual global meeting to promote international collaboration, and fellowships and scholarships for aspiring healthcare professionals from low- and middle-income nations.

Dr. Sadok Besrour, who attended a special event at the University of Oxford to commemorate the occasion, stated:

“This investment will be endowed in perpetuity and builds on the legacy of the original Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine, which was founded in Canada in 2014. The new Center will advance this work through global research partnerships, training programs, and policy engagement to strengthen primary care systems worldwide”.

‘Primary care is the foundation of health systems that truly serve people. I am honoured to support the Besrour Centre’s mission at Oxford. I believe in the power of collaboration, and I am confident that this Centre will contribute to achieving better health for all.’

A long-standing advocate for global primary care, Dr Sadok Besrour is a Canadian physician whose leadership and philanthropy led to the founding of the original Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine in 2014.
