Parties Announce Date For The “Save The Judiciary” Protest

On Monday, May 5, 2025, starting at 5:00 a.m., a big protest called “Save the Judiciary” is planned to take place in Accra.

A coalition of political parties, including the People’s National Party (PNP), National Democratic Party (NDP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and New Patriotic Party (NPP), is organizing the demonstration.

The Ghana Union Movement (GUM), however, has made it clear that it will not be taking part in this protest.

The demonstration is in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s April 22, 2025, suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo.

Following petitions and discussions with the Council of State, a prima facie case was developed, leading to the suspension. The organizers see this as a risky precedent for Ghana’s democracy and a direct threat to the judiciary’s independence.

They claim that the protest is a nonpartisan attempt to defend the rule of law and preserve constitutional values.

Details of the demonstration:

Time & Date: 5:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2025.

Starting Point: Accra, across from the Supreme Court

Route: After passing Parliament House, the march will end at Jubilee House, where the President will receive an official petition.

The protest’s organizers have made it clear that it would be nonviolent and legal, upholding the decorum and decency that are required of democratic expression.

The organizers are urging on all citizens, civil society organizations, and religious groups to join the demonstration as a stand for justice and democracy. They stress that this is not about politics but about protecting the constitutional fabric of the nation.

Participants are encouraged to bring signs, wear comfortable clothing, and stay hydrated.
