Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II asserts that the country must go beyond the monetization of parliamentary seats in order to provide constituencies with competent candidates and better choices during elections.
The Ashanti King says that if this trend continues, the nation’s lawmaking house will be devoid of the shrewdness necessary to enact laws that the people want.
Otumfuo made this call during a meeting with the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, and other MPs, including the Hon. Andrew Amoako Asiamah, MP for the Fomena Constituency, who is a victim of political party candidate imposition.
“Why should you go for loans to contest for a Parliamentary Seat? If we don’t take care, our democracy will turn to Plutocracy where the rich will use their money to take people with the knowledge off and reign.”
Asantehene says political parties must play a significant role in ensuring ‘Government by the wealthy’ doesn’t take over the country.
“Parties must look for competent people not those with money during primaries. Give the constituents their preference. Some party executives sitting somewhere are able to impose on the people.”
