
President John Dramani Mahama has announced major changes in the leadership of Ghana’s security services on March 17, 2025, with the appointment of new service chiefs in the country’s armed forces.
These appointments will take effect on March 24, 2025, and are intended to fortify the defense and security framework of the country.
Ghana Armed Forces (GAF):
• Acting Chief of the Defence Staff: Brigadier General William Agyapong
• Acting Chief of Army Staff: Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu
• Acting Chief of Naval Staff: Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing
• Acting Chief of Air Staff: Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong
Acting Chief of Staff: Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan
These appointments are pending consultation with the Council of State, as required by law.

President Mahama has also named new leaders for several important security agencies in addition to the military appointments:
Ghana Immigration Service (GIS): Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCI) Maud Harriet Anima Thompson has been promoted to Acting Comptroller-General.
