President Mahama Bids Farewell To Outgoing British High Commissioner

President John Dramani Mahama has extended warm appreciation and best wishes to the outgoing British High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Harriet Thompson, during a farewell visit at the Presidency. The meeting, held on Friday, marked the conclusion of H.E. Thompson’s four-year diplomatic service in Ghana, during which she was widely recognized for her commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Ghana.

Welcoming the High Commissioner, President Mahama expressed his gratitude for the significant role she played in deepening cooperation in areas such as trade, education, governance, security, and climate action. He commended her leadership, her hands-on engagement with both government and civil society, and her efforts to promote inclusive development.

“Ghana and the United Kingdom have enjoyed a long-standing and mutually beneficial partnership, and your tenure has helped to build on that solid foundation,” President Mahama stated. “We are grateful for the constructive diplomacy you have championed and the goodwill you have shown toward the people of Ghana.”

Her Excellency Harriet Thompson thanked President Mahama for the collaboration and hospitality she received during her time in Ghana. She highlighted key areas of progress made during her tenure, including expanded UK support for Ghana’s economic development, enhanced cooperation on security and counter-terrorism in West Africa, and people-to-people exchanges that continue to flourish.

“It has been an honour to serve in Ghana, a country known for its warmth, vibrancy, and democratic spirit,” she said. “I leave with fond memories and a strong sense of optimism about the future of UK-Ghana relations.”

The High Commissioner’s departure marks the end of a term characterized by close engagement with national and regional institutions, advocacy on human rights and gender equality, and a shared commitment to sustainable development goals. Her tenure also saw increased UK investment in infrastructure and entrepreneurship, as well as continued support for Ghana’s COVID-19 recovery efforts.
