President John Dramani Mahama cannot use two months to reset the galamsey epidemic in the nation, as many had anticipated, according to Kwaku Owusu Banahene, a member of the government communications team.
The communicator said in an interview with Angel FM on March 19, 2025, that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the country’s immediate former government, destroyed the nation’s lands and waterways during their eight years in office, and that this damage could not be repaired in the first two months of the new administration.
“You’ve [NPP] used eight years to destroy our lands, so someone cannot use two months to fix it. President Mahama said he’ll fix it; allow him to fix it,” he stated.
He added that Ghana’s cocoa crop has suffered as a result of the NPP’s use of illicit mining operations to destroy agricultural areas while it was in power.
“The NPP spent $10 million on cocoa roads, meanwhile, you’ve used eight years to destroy our water bodies,” Mr. Owusu emphasised.
The member of the communication team went on to say that the NPP government cancelled the syndicated loans, which were supposed to be used in part for cocoa roads. The audit that followed revealed that $10 billion had been spent on building cocoa roads around the nation.
According to him, the president will shortly sanitize the mining industry, so he begged Ghanaians to be patient.
