President Mahama Has Now Adopted Military Regime Tactics— Nabla

Janet Nabla and President John Mahama

People’s National Party (PNP) leader Janet Asana Nabla has been harshly critical of President John Dramani Mahama’s current administration, comparing its actions to those of a military regime.

She claims that the government’s activities are reminiscent of authoritarian governance and go against Ghana’s democratic values, including the purported use of military force against political opponents and attempts to weaken democratic institutions.

Nabla called these measures, which included the recent search of Dr. Ernest Addison’s home, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana, illegal and a sign of the government’s larger effort to quell opposition.

She said in a recent interview,

“President Mahama and the NDC government have now adopted military regime tactics to deal with their opponents.”

President Mahama was also chastised by her for considering petitions to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office. She believes that Mahama’s prior pledges to support judicial independence and empower women have been betrayed by this action.

Such measures go counter to the president’s pledge to uphold the Affirmative Action Law and guarantee substantial female representation in government, Nabla underlined.

Why Complain About Capt. Traoré’s Gun When Every President Had One On Their Right Side?

Nabla urged President Mahama to persuade his followers to stop these actions, warning that such lawlessness could devolve into chaos akin to a military administration.

These complaints, which call for a return to democratic standards and the preservation of institutional independence, are a reflection of growing worries among civil society organizations and opposition parties on the direction of governance under President Mahama’s administration.
