In an interview on Hello FM in Kumasi, Dennis Kwakwa, a member and the Ashanti regional head of communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), voiced his grave concerns, saying that President Mahama’s actions during his second term are extremely dangerous.
He made these remarks in response to the arrest of Chairman Wontumi, also known as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP. According to Kwakwa, the arrest is part of a larger trend of political targeting under Mahama’s direction, which he sees as a danger to democratic values.
He voiced harsh disapproval of the acts of President John Mahama during his second term in power. President Mahama’s actions are “very dangerous,” he said, especially considering what he is doing to Chairman Wontumi.
“Such acts could create a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s political procedures”, Dennis Kwakwa said.
There has been a great deal of controversy around Chairman Wontumi’s detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). His bail was set at GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified, which many people, including members of the NPP, have criticized as being too high and politically charged.
The bail restrictions, according to Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, are “unreasonable and superfluous,” acting more as a form of punishment than a mandated legal obligation.

He questioned the justification for such strict bail requirements and underlined that Wontumi had complied with law enforcement.
Political tensions in Ghana have escalated as a result of this episode, with the NPP accusing the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state institutions to silence critics.
The circumstances underscores concerns about the potential misuse of legal processes for political gain.
