President John Mahama has vowed to address the growing problem of illegal gold mining, or “galamsey,” which has negatively affected Ghana’s cocoa production and environment.
The detrimental effects of galamsey are profound, with cocoa farmers abandoning their farms due to uncompetitive prices and environmental degradation caused by illegal mining.
This has contributed to a significant decline in cocoa yields, affecting both local livelihoods and global chocolate prices.
Allegations of political elites supporting the miners have made the situation even more complex, making it very difficult to enforce existing laws.
