President Mahama’s Women’s Bank Pledge: Where Does It Stand Now?

Though not yet fully achieved, President John Mahama’s pledge to create a Women’s Development Bank (WDB) is making headway.

A major campaign pledge was fulfilled when the government included GH¢51.3 million as seed funds for the WDB in the 2025 national budget.

The bank’s mission is to support women entrepreneurs, especially those in industries including manufacturing, technology, trade, and agriculture, by offering low-interest loans and customized financial services.

With the goal of having the WDB fully operating by the middle of 2025, the President declared that it will be launched within 120 days of taking office. Nevertheless, that did not come to pass though in progress.

Given that the Bank of Ghana requires a minimum capital of GH¢400 million to form a bank, several opponents contend that the GH¢51.3 million allotted to the bank is insufficient.

Since the WDB has not yet been launched as of May 2025, there are worries that the mid-year operational deadline may not be met on time.

The Women’s Development Bank has not yet been put into operation, despite the government having made preliminary plans and funding commitments.

Although the administration is still committed to launching the WDB by the middle of 2025, questions have been raised about its timely implementation and adequate finance.
