According to reports, Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré has escaped yet another assassination attempt, the most recent in a string of threats against his rule. Reports say, there was a lot of gunfire in Ouagadougou, the capital, early this week.
Since his military takeover, this episode represents the 18th attempt of this kind. The president’s close protection squad reportedly stopped the attack before it could be carried out.
The attackers’ identities and motivations are yet unknown. This incident highlights Burkina Faso’s persistent instability and security issues.
President Traoré has been the target of several coup and assassination attempts since taking office in September 2022. Notably, a coup attempt against him was foiled by authorities in September 2023, which resulted in the arrest of multiple officials. Furthermore, another coup attempt was thwarted in November 2024, underscoring the country’s continued instability.
